The Advanced Composites Group that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and talented technician to assist with test sample preparation and mechanical evaluation of novel advanced composite materials. The successful candidate is expected to work with test engineers and other senior technical staff to conduct coupon, sub-component, and component level testing, machine and fabricate composite test coupons, perform metrology, perform test systems mechanical assembly, hydraulic assembly and maintenance, and support general lab operations. Candidate will shadow senior technical staff to develop skills, while testing operations would be carried out in association with a test engineer. Responsible for cable layout and routing, electromechanical troubleshooting, instrument calibrations, quarter-bridge strain gage transducers, validation to DAQ systems, creation, and use of Instron Bluehill Universal (BHU) and MTS Testworks 4 test methods, use and assembly of 3000psi hydraulic systems and 120psi compressed air systems, as well as their maintenance.

 

Minimum Qualifications

T1 Minimum Qualifications
• High School Graduate 
• Be able to perform arithmetic calculations for the verification of machinery assemblies, stress & strain calculations, and validation of test data. Have a working understanding of basic algebra and trigonometry, and SI/US customary units.
• Proficient with hand and power tools, and simple part fabrication/machining.
• Good understanding of electrical signals and troubleshooting.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to maintain records, laboratory supplies, and storage tracking.
• Detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks.
• Capable of prioritizing tasks to meet goals and produce quality work.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen.


T2 Minimum Qualifications
• Must meet the qualifications of a T1.
• High School Graduate with 3 years experience
• Experience working with composite layup, manufacturing, or machining.
• Previous mechanical testing laboratory experience.
• Experience using Instron, MTS, or other mechanical test equipment.
• Has worked with data acquisition systems and instrumentation.
• Familiarity with ASTM composites standards.
• Familiarity with test coupon fabrication best practices.
• Must thrive in fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.

 

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Has worked with data acquisition systems and instrumentation. (Extensometry, Digital Image Correlation, Strain Gages, LVDT’s, deflectometers).
• Experience in data reduction and analysis techniques.
• Machine shop experience; basic tool and jig design and fabrication.
• Experience with ISO 9001-15 quality system practices.
