Job Description:

General Purpose

Develop engineering documents, plans, and specifications associated with the design, operation, and maintenance of company SCADA systems used for the monitoring and control of the company’s expansive electric grid.

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Assist in the SCADA design of RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) architectures and systems to support numerous grid-connected initiatives and projects, including the creation and modifications to RTU designs, configurations, and points list implementations.

  • Coordinate with various engineering disciplines, project engineers/managers, and customer representatives to finalize SCADA point lists based on anticipated requirements. 

  • Work with database analysts, business system analysts, and advanced application teams to ensure the remote data requirements are completely and accurately implemented into the OSI Monarch EMS/SCADA system. 

  • Deliver on commitments, performing site visits and coordinating with field personnel when necessary to accomplish assigned work. 

  • Maintain project timeliness and budgets. 

  • Develop complete SCADA designs utilizing standardized engineering methods. 

In addition to the above, the Level 2 responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the design, development, and evaluation of systems, process, or facilities to support company objectives utilizing engineering methods.

  • Assist in the development of moderately complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments.

  • Train and mentor level 1 SCADA engineers.

  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to senior engineers/management to meet business needs.

  • Deliver on commitments to accomplish the assigned work.

  • Assist in analyzing and developing standard engineering methods, when requested.

Requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a Bachelor’s degree.  A minimum of two years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
  • Basic experience in engineering related field. 
  • Basic knowledge of electric grid energy management systems or similar for the purpose of configuring and engineering SCADA systems used for electric grid monitoring, protection and control.
  • Knowledge and application of principles in area of SCADA engineering. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations. 
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness. 
  • Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions. 
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools. 
  • A sufficient amount on-site presence may be required to perform hands-on and support functions of the position.

In addition to the above, the Level 2 requirements include:

  • A minimum of three years of directly related experience in engineering related field. 
  • Applied knowledge of electric grid energy management systems or similar for the purpose of configuring and engineering SCADA systems used for electric grid monitoring, protection, and control.
  • Knowledge and application of principles in area of SCADA engineering.

Preferences

  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Engineering experience specifically related to industrial power systems or electric utility power systems. 
  • Working knowledge of SCADA terminology and systems, including RTU (Remote Terminal Unit), IED (Intelligent Electronic Device), EMS (Energy Management System), HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and Annunciator technologies. 
  • Working knowledge of DNP3 protocol. 
  • Working knowledge of IP networking and Ethernet communications.
  • Working knowledge of serial communication standards, including TIA-232-F (RS-232) and TIA-485(-A) (RS-485).
  • Working knowledge of OSI Monarch energy management system. 
  • Basic understanding of fiber transport and microwave/wireless system technologies, including TDM-based communications systems. 
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and the National Electric Code.
