European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

With the High-Energy-Density (HED) and the Materials Imaging and Dynamics (MID) instruments the physical properties of a variety of material states of materials are deciphered for a wide range of dense and hot conditions, which in turn will deepen our understanding of material science, astrophysical phenomena as well as the dynamic processes in dense plasmas. The instruments offer a variety of X-ray diagnostics and techniques together with powerful drivers and cutting-edge ultrafast electronics and sensing.

 

For the operation of the HED and MID instruments, user support, maintenance and upgrades, the MID and HED instrument teams are seeking a

The Position

Tasks as Team Leader for Instrument Electronics

Act as team leader for electronics at the SASE2 instruments MID and HED at the European XFEL, in a team with two additional electrical technicians, this includes:

  • Work plans, including functional directives
  • Work organization and setting priorities within the framework of priorities defined at higher level
  • Development of team members
  • Performance of annual feedback talks
  • Functional supervision
  • Safety at work
  • Time management of team members
  • Support the Group Leader in various matters regarding overall group coordination, functioning, and development (e.g. in meeting organization, budget planning and new developments)

Tasks as Electronics Engineer

  • Hardware troubleshooting: high-level hardware software troubleshooting, IT connections and Karabo devices (e.g. Basler cameras, motor controllers, or other electronic devices)
  • Implementation of new and user supplied equipment
  • Creation of “Control Requirement Documentation” and “Change Request” documents for new and existing components, respectively
  • Connection of new IT equipment. Inventorying, network registrations of components, setting up DHCP
  • Programming, e.g. writing macros for control software
  • Support of user operation

Requirements

Team Leaders are requested to show and demonstrate the following skills: self-awareness, social awareness and social skills. In particular, the person should:

Further requirements for the position as Electronics Engineer:

  • Education as electronics engineer or senior technician. Experience in automation is considered an asset.
  • Qualification for “Elektrofachkraft” or suitable to obtain this qualification after training (education as “electrical engineer/​technician”)
  • Knowledge of software – hardware integration, for instance using Python programming or similar, is required
  • Experience with Beckhoff and TwinCAT is considered an asset
  • Knowledge about IT networks, DHCP
  • Ability to read EPLAN documentation
