Typical tasks include:
  • Public outreach and education, visiting restaurants, giving civic league talks, distributing public service messages in neighborhoods, and providing outreach at festivals and events.
  • Inspecting grease traps for proper installation, cleaning, and maintenance; teaching people about the right way to dispose of grease and enforcing ordinances.
  • Maintains various logs and documents inspections. Requires competence in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and database systems; must be skilled in organizing and maintaining accurate records. Reads technical instructions, procedure manuals, and interprets data to solve practical problems. Composes clear, accurate and courteous correspondence.
  • Performs other departmental duties as needed or assigned.
The successful candidate must be able to obtain a Special Conservator of the Peace endorsement within 6 months of hire. Must be able to comprehend and apply city ordinances fairly and consistently; and be a skilled investigator, detecting violations and recommending appropriate corrective action in a calm effective manner.
 
Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; exercise sound judgement and be able to testify in court.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education, or equivalent experience in environmental outreach, environmental compliance, law enforcement, or education. Associates degree in environmental/health studies, engineering, or a closely related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standards, this job class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license with a driving record that complies with the City Driving Standards.
Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
