Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking to hire two Assistant State Design Engineers who will report directly to the Deputy State Design Engineer. This position holds significant responsibilities related to project delivery, policy development, risk management, and risk aversion. The successful candidates will be accountable for overseeing and implementing design standards, project development processes, and related policies within WSDOT. They will serve as the lead for various HQ design office functions and will provide direction and approval for the definition, design, and development of all capital projects across the state. Additionally, the Assistant State Design Engineer will contribute to the development and implementation of agency policies and procedures for Highway Safety projects and work closely with other divisions within WSDOT. The primary purpose of this position is to steward the project development process, administer design policy, and approve design elements and procedures that impact project scope, budget, and schedule. Ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, particularly the Americans with Disabilities Act, is another key responsibility. The Assistant State Design Engineer's expertise and oversight play a critical role in achieving short-term objectives such as mobility improvement, multi-modal integration, collision reduction, and asset preservation while also contributing to long-term goals like tort risk reduction, system performance improvement, and Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) confidence in WSDOT's statewide stewardship.
