The San Rafael Sanitation District (SRSD), which is a part of the City of San Rafael, is seeking a Principal Engineer to join its Engineering Department. This role requires strong project management, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, as well as a public works background, ideally in sewer and storm drains. The District is continuously working on exciting capital improvement projects (CIP) this engineer will be able to get their hands on. This is a small, yet highly performing agency where each engineer has the opportunity to lead their own projects through, from start to finish. THE JOB
The Principal Engineer leads all the functions of the Engineering Department, including three staff and a CIP budget of approximately $14 million. They will report to the District Manager, acting on behalf of them in their absence. This position oversees the design and construction of public capital projects that involve sanitary sewers, force mains, pump stations, and facilities. The Principal Engineer will work closely communicating and coordinating with the SRSD Operations & Maintenance Manager on these capital projects. Together they will ensure that the new or replaced sewer facilities meet the needs and requirements of the maintenance staff, so the system can be properly and easily maintained and processes for efficiency can continually be improved. The Principal Engineer will also ensure these projects adhere to codes, engineering standards, and District policies, while also supporting District operations by developing reports, approving engineering drawings, preparing the bi-annual budget, and developing staff.
 
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have a background and experience in public works and specifically sewer/storm drains and be a motivational leader, role model, and personnel manager. They will work to develop and retain staff through hands-on training and should be an exemplary communicator and provide their team members with continuous constructive feedback. This leader will have impressive project management skills, with the ability to collaborate with others and hold them accountable. Along with being a leader, they will be a team player who isn’t afraid to roll their sleeves up to get the work done. The successful candidate will be solutions-oriented and eager to interact with the public, staff, and other key stakeholders. Strong public speaking and presentation skills are needed of the successful candidate in this dynamic role.
 
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Six years of increasingly responsible public work construction and maintenance experience
  • Registration as a licensed Civil Engineer in the State of California
