This position is located at Eglin AFB, Florida. • Non-Supervisory Aerospace Research Engineer, Mechanical Research Engineer, Research Physicist, Computational Research Engineer, or a General Research Engineer for a mid-level position in support of the Science and Technology Division (RWT), Computational Engineering Sciences Branch (RWTC) at Eglin AFB, in Valparaiso, Florida. The incumbent will perform physics-based Modeling and Simulation of energetic material effects in ordnance systems and subsystems and perform research in the automation of weapon design simulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (R2/R3):
• Must have demonstrated proficiency in the use of physics-based, high-fidelity modeling and simulation software for the analysis of high strain rate solid mechanics, shock physics, detonation, blast, or compressible reacting flow.
• Knowledge of dynamic, high strain, high strain rate Modeling and Simulation techniques.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• US Citizenship.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
• Must possess a Masters degree in Science or Engineering (S&E) from an accredited academic institution. Applicant must list degree information on resume to include any professional military education.

R2 level
A minimum of 2 years of related experience in addition to a Masters degree in Science, Engineering, or related filed from an accredited academic institution; or a PhD and 1 year of related experience.

R3 level
A minimum of 7 years of related experience in addition to a Masters degree in Science, Engineering, or related filed from an accredited academic institution; or a PhD and 6 years of related experience.
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

Preferred Qualifications (R2)
• Experience calibrating product Equations of State or Reactive Flow models for explicit hydrodynamics simulations.
• PhD in engineering, physics, or related discipline from an accredited school
• Program Management techniques and practices
Knowledge of:
• Shockwave physics
• High speed combustion
• Computational Modeling and Simulation Techniques
• Eulerian or LaGrangian continuum mechanics
• Molecular, Meso, and/or Continuum scale Modeling, Simulation & Analysis
• Equation of State, Reactive Burn, and/or Constitutive material model development for munition materials
• Industry or government Finite Element, Hydrocode, and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics software packages
• Pre-processing and post processing techniques of Computational Modeling, Simulation & Analysis
• Python, Matlab or other common scripting language
• AF munition full scale and sub scale testing processes and techniques
• Munition shock and impulse Modeling, Simulation & Analysis techniques
• Munition blast wave propagation & product flow in confined and open spaces

Preferred Qualifications (R3) (In addition to those listed above)
o Experience working with or within the Department of Defense research community
o Experience with developing and maintaining close liaison relationships with industry, academia and other Government agencies for Science and Technology (S&T).
o Experience with publication in recognized S&T journals.
o Cultivates and sustains a professional environment of cooperation, cohesion and teamwork.
o Team building within a research community with communication skills to navigate creative tension and differences of opinions.
o Anticipates and takes steps to prevent counter-productive confrontations. Manages and resolves conflicts and disagreements in a constructive manner.
