Job Description:

CRANE Currency in Dalton Massachusetts is Hiring! 

The Product Development Scientist will lead and support the development of processes and features for next generation banknote technologies. You will have the opportunity to apply your deep knowledge of materials structure, properties and processes. 

Some of the Responsibilities of the R&D Product Development Scientist includes:  

  • Design & execute experiments that leverage chemical and physical first principles and robust data sets 
  • Leverage materials expertise to influence material selection, formulations, failure analyses, method development, product construction, and product performance evaluation
  • Develop lab/bench scale methods 
  • Conduct and communicate detailed analyses of product performance failures; identifying possible materials, construction, process, or test exposure effects that led to below-target performance
  • Contribute to the development of robust processes for production of currency papers
  • Invent, prototype, and integrate new product features using expertise in material compatibility and durability
  • Analyze and refine experimental approaches to model potential production outcomes
  • Achieve breakthrough results 
  • Work with Operations to translate new product and process knowledge
  • Collaborate on a highly technical level with colleagues
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating new technologies in areas of currency paper, and integrating security features 
  • Provide support to internal and external customers & Present technical information in a succinct and understandable manner to diverse audiences
  • Provide data correlations, information, and direction to influence strategic initiatives
  • Apply appropriate product and process risk evaluations within a stage-gate framework
  • Lead root cause investigations, capability development or product development projects

Requirements:
  • A degree in physical science or engineering (e.g., Paper Science & Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or Chemical Engineering) with progressive industrial experience in R&D, product development, process engineering or manufacturing with an emphasis in process/product development to meet or exceed at least one of the following requirements:
    • Bachelor’s Degree and a min. of 10 yrs. Experience
    • Master’s degree with a min. 7 yrs. experience
    • Doctorate degree with a min. of 5 yrs. experience
Desired Technical Experience, Skills and Characteristics:
  • Ability to understand customer needs
  • Keen interest in how product base materials and subsequent reactions may be affected (opportunistically or detrimentally) 
  • Expertise in interpretation of spectroscopic data, rheological measurement, optical characterization
  • Product development within a continuous improvement environment
  • Dedication to a fact-based decision-making mindset, guided by logic and rigorous data analysis
  • Experience with physical and analytical property testing, Six Sigma, and Lean principles
  • Experience having led multifunctional teams using disciplined stage-gate processes is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage research projects and influence teams through thoughtful facilitation and creative idea exchange
  • Abiity to present technical information in a succinct and understandable manner
  • Ability to transition lab scale concepts to manufacturing to yield products that are successful in the field
  • Willingness to provide honest feedback and input
  • Analytical, data-driven decision maker with a strong drive to understand the manufacturing environment, process and material constraints, customer requirements
  • Proven track record of providing data-centric technical recommendations that drive business growth through reliable processes that produce products reproducibly with minimized variation
  • Creative, self-starter regularly applying your development experience, critical thinking, analytical skills, statistical and project management tools to efficiently conceptualize, develop, and scale-up robust technologies
  • Ability to coordinate development, scale-up, and validation of new products and product modifications within highly-motivated multifunctional teams
  • Ability to provide strong customer service and technical support to various areas of the business
  • Ability to lead or contribute to processes like FMEA to mitigate product and process risk
  • Ability to design experiments and run trials to be efficient in the development of process and products
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time may be required
