Job Description:

Crane Currency is seeking an experienced Analytical Scientist to join our R&D team in Nashua, NH. This position supports product development and Production root-cause investigations through lab-scale analytical testing and experimentation, and translation of fundamental understanding of product chemistries, construction, and surface interactions to performance criteria.

R&D Analytical Scientist is Responsible for
  • Oversee maintenance, support, and training for R&D Analytical Instruments
  • Develop, implement, and support safety and security (software/firmware) for R&D Analytical Instruments
  • Develop, implement, and support file maintenance for R&D Analytical Instruments repository.
  • Track R&D Analytical Instruments metrics (usage, operation costs).
  • Deliver annual assessment on instrument resources to site leadership.
  • Evaluate and match current capabilities to R&D needs .
  • Develop methods for materials and product characterization or outsource characterization where internal capabilities do not exist.
  • Develop idea funnel for capturing fundamental “underpinning” characterization needs .
  • Document new methods and insights in technical reports.
  • Lead analytical capability development projects.
  • Propose and lead new fundamental investigation projects.
  • Lead materials characterization sub-teams as part of broader NPD programs.
  • Document outcomes in technical reports.
  • Develop and submit proposals for Material Modifications or NPD projects.
  • Support or lead root-cause investigation products.
  • Serve as R&D primary liaison to partner functions: QA and Product Management (Competitor Product).
  • Seek to understand needs of partner, define future state,propose how we can reach future state, and work with site leadership to implement.
  • Advise other company locations on analytical testing or instrumentation needs.
  • Lead the effort of working with external partnership for analytical characterization.
  • Maintain awareness and deliver industry conference trip reports to site leadership on emerging analytical capabilities.
  • Establish and maintain relationships including potential collaborations with service providers. 
Requirements :
  • Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science or Plastics Engineering or a related field
  • Master’s Degree or PhD strongly desired.
  • 3+ Yrs. experience in characterization of polymeric materials, inks, coatings and adhesives, films, etc.
  • 2+ Yrs. Industrial research experience concentrating on new product and process development.
  • Green Belt level or demonstrated use of Six Sigma tools.
  • DOE training and/or demonstrated execution of DOE’s.
  • Interdisciplinary experience and proficiency in the fields of materials science, optics, physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Experience with polymer coatings, adhesives, sealants, inks, paper, and optical materials and devices is desired.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and reasoning skills; find solutions to complex problems in a timely manner without compromising quality or principles.
  • Experience in research environment and/or journal quality publications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with a variety of personalities both inside and outside the company. Able to present ideas and results clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information skillfully and maintains confidentiality.
  • High level of creativity and strong attention to detail.
  • Organized and has the ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and promote quality
