Job Description:

This position is for an on-site process engineer working at the Energetic Materials Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base. Individual will aid senior and mid-level scientists and engineers in planning and executing research activities by designing and optimizing processes and related equipment for energetic materials production. Interacts with other engineering groups to define, document, test, and analyze data. Identifies functional problems and suggests resolutions. Assists in the definition of internal quality control standards and the maintenance of reliability programs. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures related to polymer and chemical processing. Relies on engineering experience with minimal direction or guidance from technical staff.


Candidate should be able to plan and execute systematic research efforts adhering to standard research principles. Employs complex and frequently novel techniques to acquire necessary data. The complexity varies from that of standard documented techniques using existing equipment to the development of new experimental methods/procedures requiring extensive literature review, communication with contemporaries, and independent research.


Minimum Qualifications
• BS degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or related physical science with a minimum of 3 years related work experience.
• Experience handling and working with hazardous materials.
• Experience with a range of chemical engineering principles, including heat transfer, pipe/fluid flows, vacuum systems, and kinetics. Familiar with CAD design software.
• Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required.
• Candidate must be able to obtain a SECRET level security clearance and DoD explosive certification within 1 year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

 

• Detailed understanding of polymer chemistry, experience designing and building small process-related tools and equipment and/or complex fluid flows.
• Strong planning and engineering design mindset. Ability to use engineering principles to conceptualize requirements, author documents such as material, product, and equipment specifications, and design mechanical fixtures/assemblies for laboratory and pilot-scale chemical processes.
• Experience handling, packaging, and transporting energetic materials to include: raw ingredients, composite formulations, and energetic wastes resulting from processing materials.
• Attention to detail. Performs procedures associated with traceability and accountability of research materials.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to understand and adhere to safety policies.
• Able to work with a diverse and experienced team of scientists, engineers, and technicians in support and advisory roles.
• Demonstrated history of punctuality and dependability at work.
• Demonstrated history of successful self-direction on complicated, multi-tiered tasks.


Special Instructions to Applicants

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
