The Multifunctional Structures and Materials Group (MFSM) that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division in the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is an elite science and engineering research group responsible for creating and developing new materials, structures (usually composites), and manufacturing processes for cutting edge and next generation things from every day household items, military systems, to futuristic spacecraft. Each project we take on is a challenge and our work environment is very dynamic – no two days are the same. We have about 30 personnel in our group and 3 large laboratories filled with conventional and cutting edge material manufacturing, processing, and analysis equipment from benchtop to industrial capacity. We are seeking a highly motivated, talented, and organized technician to manage these laboratories and keep them in proper working order, highly organized and clean, and safe. This position will report directly to the group leader, and duties could include but not be limited to the following:
• Arrange and manage equipment and facility maintenance and upgrades with outside vendors as appropriate.
• Perform equipment and facility maintenance and upgrades as appropriate.
• Establish and maintain laboratory facility, equipment, tools, and storage order and cleanliness.
• Establish and maintain inventories of materials, chemicals, supplies, equipment, documentation, and etc.
• Plan and execute facility renovations, expansions, and upgrades.
• Plan and execute facility events such as tours.
• Implement and manage safety protocols.
• Purchase equipment, materials, supplies, and parts.
• Dispose of equipment, materials, supplies, and parts.
• Track, schedule, and manage facility and equipment utilization.
• Develop and implement all manner of laboratory and equipment training.
• Provide technical expertise in the manufacture and testing of aerospace grade composite structures.
• Support engineering staff with part fabrication work and/or testing.
• Support research programs by providing technical recommendations to engineering staff on manufacturing processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Technician Level 2 (T2)
• High school graduation or its equivalent plus a minimum of three years of related technical experience, is required. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen. Permanent residents (green card holders) are not eligible for this position.
• Training and experience qualifications by level as shown above.
• Ability to perform “hands-on” and moderately physical work in a laboratory or shop environment.
• Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Ability to work well with others and motivate fellow team members.
• Ability to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision.
• Ability to properly document technical data generated by work projects.
• Experience with operating and maintaining many different types of lab equipment and apparatuses, coordinating service calls, ordering and installing parts, financial administration, and managing a technical laboratory.
• Experience operating in a lab/shop environment of high level of organization and cleanliness.
• Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Technician Level 3 (T3)
.• High school graduation or its equivalent plus a minimum of eight years of related technical experience, is required. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.
• Must meet the minimum requirements as listed for a T2

Technician Level 4 (T4)
.• High school graduation or its equivalent plus a minimum of twelve years of related technical experience, is required. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.
• Must meet the minimum requirements as listed for a T2
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Demonstrated successful experiences performing all of the minimum qualifications listed above.
• Proficiency in CAD, math software, computer programming, and/or machine programming.
• Graduation from a 14 CFR Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician School or achievement of similar certification including training in the manufacture and/or repair of composite structures. For example: Texas State Technical College, Aircraft Airframe Technology AAS, or Sinclair College, Associate of Applied Science - Aviation Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance Technology.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
