The Multifunctional Structures and Materials Group (MFSM) that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division in the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is an elite science and engineering research group responsible for creating and developing new materials, structures (usually composites), and manufacturing processes for cutting-edge and next-generation structures from every day household items, military systems, to futuristic spacecraft. Each project we take on is a challenge in the unknown and the work environment is very dynamic and multidisciplinary – with no ordinary here no two projects or days are the same. This position will encompass a wide range of research activities, including modeling, testing, fabrication, and inspection. Candidates will work closely with other engineers, technicians, and program managers to deliver high-quality work to customers. Reporting, proposal writing, and regular customer interactions will be a component of this position.


Minimum Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in science or engineering from an accredited university.
• Five years of experience in mechanical design/simulation, testing, and/or inspection.
• Experience with Finite Element Analysis.
• Experience in cross-functional teams encompassing engineers, technicians, etc.
• Experience working in laboratory setting.
• Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• A master’s degree in science or engineering from an accredited university.
• Previous employment in government laboratory facility.
• Strong demonstrated knowledge in material science.
• Strong demonstrated knowledge in aerospace hardware and components.
• Documented successful experiences of properly documenting technical data generated by work projects which can include published technical papers or reports.
• A strong working knowledge of the Air Force Research Laboratory is preferred.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
