The Project Delivery Administration – Environmental Implementation Division has an opening for an Engineer.  This position will be part of a larger 40-person team working with engineers, project managers, inspectors, and business administrators.  Our team is split into three divisions, each focusing on the planning, design, and construction of primarily stormwater and sanitary sewer related improvements. This position will be assigned  to the Construction Department, focusing on the delivery of Capital Improvements, engineering, and design of major Capital Improvement projects.

An important role you’ll have as an Engineer is to manage design and construction projects along with staff. You will also be able to:

  • Use your engineering expertise
  • Design projects and review plans for constructability
  • Help coordinate stakeholder interactions
  • Manage budgets and build to details and specifications
  • Work with entities outside the city for coordination of construction projects
  • Balance time to support functions, help the team with design and construction related issues and other duties assigned to support the team

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs full professional level engineering work on a variety of projects and assignments from inception to completion, which includes reviewing construction plans and designs for conformance and compliance, providing technical engineering oversight and guidance, coordinating project phases, and recommending solutions to construction issues and problems.
  • Works with stakeholders, both internal and external to the city, which includes attending neighborhood meetings, working with intergovernmental organizations, interacting with utility companies, other city agencies and departments, elected officials, and consultants and contractors.
  • Reviews project bid materials and cost estimates, which includes evaluating bid items and quantities, and works with stakeholders on project designs, concepts, and timeframes for project completion.
  • Acts as a team lead on projects and assignments, coordinates the work for contractors and consultants, assists inspectors with difficult or unusual code compliance issues, keeps team member focused on tasks and assignments, and allocates resources effectively.
  • Oversees and directs construction coordination meetings involving private development projects and city capital improvement projects to lead the development process and ensure the timely approval and completion of projects.
  • Reviews project budgets in the design phase, determines work plans and schedules, monitors project budgets and expenditures throughout construction, and ensures project deliverables stay on-time and target, ensures quality control, and the project stays on budget.
  • Performs project management work on projects, which includes monitoring overall construction and design, tracking project schedules, overseeing costs and expenses, ensuring compliance and conformance to engineering standards within contract specifications, and confers with management on risks, costs, and allocation of resources within the various phases of the project.
  • Reviews projects to ensures compliance with engineering codes and standards, monitors projects for quality, identifies strategies to overcome barriers, ensures materials comply with project specifications, reviews calculations, and performs field and site inspections.

While the full pay range of this Job Classification is $ 74,417.00 - $ 122,788.00, our target hiring salary for this position is between $80,000.00 - $98,603.00 depending on education, experience and qualifications.

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • At least four years of professional experience in the managing heavy civil design and construction projects.  Experience working on storm, sanitary, and water quality projects with the City and County of Denver, equivalent municipality, or with a private consultant.
  • Experience with multi-discipline projects that may include additional components including transportation, signals, and bike lanes.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders and the public.
  • A collaborative approach to working in a team environment with complex project issues.
  • Computer skills including but not limited to AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcMap, CUHP/SWMM, FLO2D, MS Office and Adobe.

  • Education:  Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience: Four (4) years’ experience as an entry level engineer.
  • Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
  • Licensures / Certifications:  Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application.
  • Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
