Job Description:

The Traffic Operations Engineer is responsible for coordinating and conducting engineering and field operational studies including collecting and analyzing volume, speed, and delay data for vehicles and pedestrians, as well as, collecting other field engineering and observational data. Actual engineering studies include a variety of traffic related studies including, but not limited to, warrant studies, speed hump studies, volume and speed studies, and Level of Service. Also responsible to monitor traffic accident data and provide various reports.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS   

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Coordinates and conducts engineering and operational field studies, and clarifies engineering studies.
  • Performs traffic operational and capacity studies utilizing current transportation software.
  • Administers the traffic accident data program, traffic engineering analysis record and filing system, and the traffic count program.
  • Extracts intersection and highway volume counts from mechanical counters.
  • Prepares engineering reports, traffic accident collision diagrams, and traffic accident summaries. 
  • Maintains mechanical traffic operations equipment and accident databases.
  • Performs other engineering operations duties of a similar nature or level.

 

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  High School Diploma, Two (2) year degree from a vocational college or an Associate’s degree in engineering or related field. 

Preferred:  Engineering In Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification

Experience:  One (1) year of experience in an engineering related field, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to preform this job.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of job related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering principals, operations and study methodologies.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, including formula for calculating speed, distance, and time.
  • Knowledge of computer software for database maintenance, word processing and traffic studies and capacity analyses applications.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Licensing:   

  • Must have a valid state operator/driver’s license with good driving history.  

 CERTIFICATION: 

  • Possess or have the ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification for Work Zone within twelve (12) months.
