The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) Rapid Applications of Advanced Manufacturing (RAAM) team is seeking a highly motivated and multi-disciplinary engineer to perform applied research in the area of mechanical, electrical, and software systems development for advanced manufacturing processes. Primary focus will be on design and development of robotics, process inspection/monitoring systems, and advanced manufacturing support tools (i.e. intelligent shop aids, smart tooling).

The engineer will be responsible for a wide array of technology development projects designed to solve high-impact manufacturing challenges that may involve composites, lasers, robotics, manufacturing process monitoring and controls, part inspection, additive manufacturing, and more. This position will be expected to navigate and work closely with the vast network of expertise at UDRI to drive rapid applications for immediate manufacturing problems. In addition to collaborative work across subject matters within UDRI, the engineer will be expected to lead single tasks on larger projects and see them to completion. This will include execution and reporting of results for individual tasks as a part of larger projects within the RAAM team.


Minimum Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics from an accredited University.
• Proficiency in mechanical and/or electrical systems design
• Experience in software development.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel software.
• The ability to be “hands-on” in the lab.
• Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Ability to work well with others and motivate fellow team members.
• Ability to aid in program reporting and results documentation
• The skills to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision.
• The ability to properly document technical data generated by the assigned projects for preserving IP rights.
• Pursuant to government contract requirements, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Experience with ROS 2 robotic programming and localization
• Experience with robot integration for advanced manufacturing
• Experience with Python programming language
• Experience with electronics circuit design
• Ability to lead, plan, and execute testing sub-tasks focused on part design and qualification for the aerospace industry.
• Leadership experience
• Ability to work in a team environment with engineers, and provide ideas and recommendations on improving testing and processes.
• Ability to either present, or participate as a reviewer, in technical and program reviews.
• Ability to hold a secret level security clearance
