About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 
 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire multiple experienced engineering professionals looking to advance their career into a leadership role to serve as our next Northwest Region (NWR) Project Engineer. The main purpose of these positions is to deliver NWR highway design and construction contracts to meet local, state, and federal standards and within scope, schedule, and budget. These positions are responsible for ensuring that projects have the best integration into the surrounding environment, function adequately for all modes of transportation and are constructible and maintainable with minimal impacts to the traveling public. The successful candidates appointed to these unique positions will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.  
 
 What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Project Engineer will:

  • Strategically plan the budget, schedule, and workforce necessary to deliver the Capital Improvement and Preservation Program (CIPP)
  • Create success by working in partnership with citizens, media, elected officials, contractors and outside agencies to plan, build, maintain, and operate an efficient transportation system. 
  • Lead a diverse office of professional and technical engineers and staff in the design and contract development of multiple transportation improvement and preservation projects according to current policies and standards, effective engineering techniques and good engineering judgement. 
  • Ensure that assigned projects are managed in accordance with WSDOT policy and procedures to meet the desired scope, schedule, budget and documentation and that projects are delivered in an environmentally responsible manner. 
  • Report on the status of assigned project to WSDOT Regional and Statewide Executive management to support and improve accountability. 
  • Coordinate input and resolve conflicts with internal organizations, personnel, outside agencies, consultants and the public. 
  • Certify by the use of Professional Engineer stamp that all WSDOT standards and policies were followed in the development of design documents, contract plans, and contract specifications in the organization and any changes executed in the administration of construction projects. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Professional Engineer (Civil Engineer) license registered in the State of Washington
  • Ability to manage a complex multimillion dollar budget. 
  • Strong Civil Engineering background including extensive knowledge of the following:
    1. Highway design and plan, specification and estimate preparation;
    2. Highway construction and construction practices;
    3. Surveying and surveying practices;
    4. WSDOT highway engineering practices, technical procedures and management processes;
    5. Environmental laws, regulations and issues;
    6. Programming and budget procedures;
    7. Right of way acquisition processes;
    8. Limited access and access management laws and guidelines;
    9. Legislative processes.

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field. 
  • Eight (8) years of experience in delivering design and construction projects. 
  • WSDOT experience in procuring projects through the design-build and design-bid-build processes
  • Knowledge of FHWA processes and requirements related to delivering federally funded projects and ensuring WSDOT meets Federal stewardship obligations.

 

Important Notes 

  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
