The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire our next Lead Inspector. As the Lead Inspector, this position will support WSDOT’s mission by leading, scheduling, and developing a construction inspection team to ensure quality, cost-effective transportation projects for the public. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.  
 
 What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lead Inspector will:

  • Manage the construction of transportation projects to ensure they meet contract specifications, budget, schedule, and permit requirements. 
  • Coordinate with the contractor, WSDOT staff, external agencies and the public as needed to manage projects to completion. 
  • Plan, schedule, direct, and monitor all inspection and testing activities on assigned projects. 
  • Manage all activities related to inspection and contractor activities including IDR’s, pay notes, schedule, correspondence, consultant activities, contractor submittals, materials requirements and WSDOT support group coordination. 
  • Inform Managers, Office Engineer, and NWR Specialty groups of project status and any change for the planned activities, proposed changes to items of work, and pending risks to scope, schedule, or budget. 
  • Meet with the Contractor to discuss issues, interpret plans and specifications and review schedules. 
  • Ensure assigned projects are kept environmentally compliant. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Construction Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent
  • Valid WA State Driver’s License
  • In depth knowledge of highway related construction procedures including inspection, materials testing, documentation procedures, Standard Specifications and how they relate to WSDOT business practices.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods relative to the documentation of construction of transportation projects.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, including ability to express complex concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Experience writing tactful, factual, concise technical and administrative letters.
  • Strong mathematical skills with ability to solve engineering problems of varying complexity.
  • Experience proposing alternate solutions to complex elements of a project coordinating with various persons with expertise within the department or within other agencies.

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 

  • Two (2) years of experience administering active construction as a construction project inspector.
  • Experience directly supervising technical/engineering staff.
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or closely related field.
  • Certified General Inspector.
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Washington State, or in another US State with the ability to achieve licensure in Washington State by comity.
  • Knowledge and experience with construction administration procedures for WSDOT projects.
  • Knowledge of the WSDOT Construction Manual, Design Manual, and utility requirements and standards.
  • WSDOT IAI certification as materials tester in all concrete, earth, aggregate and asphalt tests.

 

Important Notes 

  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
