Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire our next Project Inspector. This position accomplishes construction inspection and ensures compliance with contract plans, provisions, and Environmental permits. The incumbent prepares a variety of reports to document construction activities, field measurements, and observations. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.  
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Project Inspector will:

  • Inspect and direct contract work on construction projects assigned to the organization. 
  • Assure compliance with contract plans, provisions, and environmental permits. 
  • Investigate problems with plans and with the work as it progresses. 
  • Provide clarification of the contract requirements to the Contractor and subcontractors. 
  • Monitor quantifies used compared to proposed plan quantities to monitor and budget impacts. 
  • Prepare detailed and accurate contract documentation such as Inspectors Daily Reports, Weekly Statements, and Field Notes for pay estimates. 
  • Manage environmental best management practices to ensure permit requirements are met and ensure construction work is covered under the permits. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 2 level, the following are required:

  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training and one year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent, OR
  • Two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent such as previous inspection work, OR
  • A master’s degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.

 

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 1 level, the following are required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an ABET accredited college or university with major study in civil engineering (BSCE) or a closely related field, OR Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) 
    1. Four (4) years of related Engineering experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree.

 

Candidates at either level will have:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions to traverse over uneven ground. 
  • Ability to climb ladders to inspect structures
  • Ability to manipulate up to 40lbs. 
  • Ability to read and interpret contract plans, provisions, standard specifications, and other principles, practices, and methods relative to the construction of transportation projects. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Traffic, or related field of study)
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1
  • Two (2) years of experience in roadway related construction inspection or materials testing. 
  • Qualified tester with extensive experience in concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and compaction.
  •  WSDOT General Inspector Certification

 

Important Notes 

  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT.   • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.

  • This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Engineer field and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
    1. Transportation Engineer 1: $57,324 - $77,028
    2. Transportation Engineer 2: $64,216 - $85,020
