The Structural Materials Division of the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a researcher with experience in robotics and automation applicable to inspection and characterization of structures and substructures. Experience with modeling and simulation of robot motion and path planning is desired, particularly using open-source tools such as Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo. Experience with end-of-arm tooling integration is also of benefit. Experience with sensor-based robot tools that can be used to gather information about a part is particularly beneficial, as well as understanding of methods used to measure robot motion relative accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications

R1 Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, automation, robotics, computer science, physics, or related field.
• Effective written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate and interact with multidisciplinary scientists.
• Ability in publishing and presenting results at conferences or in peer reviewed journals.
• MATLAB and Python proficiency is required, and a basic knowledge or willingness to learn C++.
• Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must be a U.S. citizen and have the ability to pass a national agency check.

R2 Minimum Qualifications:
An R2 must meet all R1 minimum qualifications plus a minimum of three years of directly related experience.
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Masters or PhD degree in engineering, automation, robotics, computer science, physics, or related field.
• Proficiency in modern C++ programming methods.
• Experience with cobot programming/path planning, modeling and simulation of robot motion and tool offsets, end-of-arm tooling integration, sensor-based inspection technologies, or 3-D scanning systems is preferred.
• Experience with ROS, Gazebo, and other common open-source robotics control tools is also preferred.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
