The Opportunity

WSDOT Northwest Region (NWR) Bridge Maintenance is looking to fill multiple Transportation Engineer 2 positions at our Seattle office. The select candidates will participate in the delivery of the bridge inspection program for the Northwest Region and serve as an engineering representative for Bridge Maintenance Region-wide. These positions also perform flood/post flood, post-earthquake and bridge damage inspections to initially determine if structural integrity and safety could have been compromised. Our top candidates will be detail-oriented, possess outstanding technical skills, and have the ability to work independently, as well as lead and motivate others. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.  
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Inspector (TE2) will:

  • Perform specialized, routine and emergency inspections on over 1300 fixed movable span, and floating bridges along with tunnels, retaining walls, sign structure, and culverts region-wide.
  • Documentation of bridge inspections and submit reports.
  • Maintain and update bridge correspondence logs and databases. 
  • Inspect and report out bridge damage and makes recommendations for repairs to maintenance crews and perform follow up inspections of completed work.
  • Operate electronic and automatic survey equipment to collect data.
  • Represent the Bridge Maintenance Office at Pre-construction, Pre-design and Construction meetings. 
  • Perform final walkthrough inspections on State Contracts involving structures and creates punch lists of incomplete or deficient work. 
  • Work closely with the Bridge Preservation Office, Bridge Design, Bridge Construction, and Hydraulic Engineers in providing details, drawings, calculations, and other relative information towards the repair and preservation of the Region's Bridges.
  • Assist with public tours in floating bridge facilities, tunnels, and lids, and relaying information to the public about state assets. 
  • First responder to natural events 3rd party bridge and structure damage.

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Highschool Diploma or GED. 
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • At least two (2) years of experience as Bridge Maintenance Lead, Transportation Technician 3, or Bridge Engineering or equivalent bridge inspection or construction related experience.
  • Successful completion of Plans Reading Course
  • Proficient in PC Microsoft applications, Databases, and other computer software
  • Work at heights of 100 feet and higher. 
  • Ability to work next to high volume traffic
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, Ubit, snorkel lifts.  
  • The ability to transport, manipulate, and move into position materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Successful completion of Bridge Condition Inspection Training (BCIT) Fundamental's course within 1 year.

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Successful completion of FEMA ICS courses.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), N endorsement and without air brake restriction or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. 

 

Important Notes 

  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
