About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced professional looking to advance their career into a leadership role by serving as our next Mobility & Technology Manager for the Management of Mobility division. This position is responsible for the coordination and planning of integrated transportation programs and projects in the Central Puget Sound region. In addition, this position serves as the agency’s lead for the Central Puget Sound region to facilitate a broad range of creative, new solutions to improve safety and travel mobility during high-impact construction closures, incidents, weather and special events.

 

The successful candidate will establish and maintain close and collaborative relationships other WSDOT regions and programs, as well as cultivate and maintain relationships with external public and private partners including cities, counties, transit agencies and technology companies. This unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.  
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Mobility & Technology Manager will:

  • Coordinate resources and lead working groups, serve as the regional lead in development of deployment opportunities associated with new technologies such as connected vehicles and smart city applications. 
  • Anticipate and implement enhanced system management capabilities that are beneficial for construction mitigation, as well as system operations following the construction phase. 
  • Lead partnerships both internal and external to the agency, focused on developing new strategies and applications to improve mobility and safety on the Central Puget Sound transportation system. 
  • Oversee the development and tracking of the funding needed to support the planning and technical staff and assigned studies that may require consultant support. 
  • Develop, review, and apply policies, Revised Code of Washington (RCW), and Washington Administrative Codes (WAC)that impact, regulate, and direct agency operations efforts. 
  • Represent WSDOT to other jurisdictions, local government, and communities as appropriate during the delivery of the region’s future construction program. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Bachelors degree or experience [PT1] [SJ2] [SE3] in urban planning, communications, public policy, traffic engineering. 
  • Eight (8) years of experience successfully managing transportation planning, communications and public policy-focused teams and programs. A strong understanding of local, regional, state, and federal transportation planning processes. 
  • Demonstrated accountability for supervision, management and strategic decision making. 
  • Strong understanding of planning principles, and associated state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and practices related to transportation system planning and operations. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Masters degree in urban planning, communications, public policy, engineering or related field. 
  • Working knowledge of the communication protocols and practices, innovative operations technologies and methodologies. 

 

Important Notes 

  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
