Job Description:

Are you interested in working for UDRI, a national leader in scientific and engineering research, serving government, industry and nonprofit customers? We are seeking an experienced thermal engineer to provide technical leadership and direct technical contribution for multiple projects related to aircraft, ground support equipment, and vehicle sustaining engineering and commercial new product development.
 
Under the guidance of a senior engineer, this role will support and lead research, evaluation, reverse engineering, design, test/validation, and technology transition of hardware for aircraft, support equipment, vehicles, and commercial products. The ideal candidate will:
• Design, optimize, and test heat transfer systems for cooling of electronic components and create mechanical drawings as necessary, in accordance with current and applicable GD&T standards
• Modeling and analysis of thermal systems or thermal heat transfer
• Interface with client hardware owners and teams to identify and document equipment end items and components in support of lifecycle management (LCM) activities, service life extension programs (SLEP), and Digital Engineering (DigEng)
• Interface with client product development leaders to support the development of new consumer and industrial products
• Develop work breakdown structures for complex problems based on customer pain points with little supporting documentation
• Create and execute component and system level validation and qualification test plans, as well as analysis of test data and results
• Work with client hardware engineers to ensure documentation and product conformance with engineering design intent and performance requirements
The successful candidate will be self-driven, an excellent communicator, have a strong background leading technical projects to successful completion, and have systems engineering experience. The position will support multiple clients.
 
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess all of the following qualifications:
• BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Aerospace, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Materials, or related technical field)
• A minimum of 5 years' experience in related engineering position
• Thermal design, test, and analysis experience
• 2+ years creating and executing component and system level validation and qualification test plans
• Self-starter that thrives on solving technical problems and working in small teams
• Ability to create and maintain focus out of ambiguity
• Ability to follow instructions and demonstrate attention to detail
• Strong problem solving skills
• Excellent attention to detail
• Successful collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team
• Effective written communication skills
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite – namely Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Due to the nature of this position, US citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance is required
 
Preferred Qualifications
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
 
• Customer focus and record of customer satisfaction
• Effective interpersonal communication skills, demonstrated at all levels of an organization
• 7+ years engineering/technical project management experience
• 3+ years systems engineering experience
• 3+ years supporting new product development
• 3+ years of experience in analysis of components in relation to mechanical systems, including FEA for thermal analysis
• 2+ years training/mentoring/managing entry level engineers or technical student hires
• Understanding of aircraft and/or complex systems design and operation
• Ability to create, read and interpret models, technical drawings, schematics, and computer generated reports
• Proficient in 3D CAD modeling software
• Experience working in a digital engineering environment, to include Model Based Systems Engineering, TeamCenter (or other PLM environment), and/or application of SysML in Cameo or similar software tools
• Familiar with various manufacturing processes such as casting, machining, forging, heat treat and additive manufacturing for metals and/or plastics.
• Systems Engineering Certification
• Master's degree (aerospace, mechanical, materials, or related engineering field)
• Active US Security Clearance
• Experience working with socially and culturally diverse communities
