The Opportunity

WSDOT has multiple vacancies for experienced engineers to serve as our next Construction Compliance Inspectors supporting the  I-405/SR 167 Program for multiple construction offices.  These positions offer the successful candidates an opportunity to work on a very large-scale design-build projects.  Our top candidates will be comfortable performing a variety of duties in accordance with WSDOT standards to support the delivery of multi-million dollar design-build projects within the I-405/SR 167 corridors. As the Construction Compliance Inspector, the primary responsibility of these positions is to provide oversight of Design-Builder activities in the field, as well as provide oversight for compliance documentation activities, project inspection, materials testing, and project administration. These positions are responsible for making independent application of standard engineering procedures and techniques to accomplish a wide variety of work to meet project deadlines.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction Compliance Inspector will:

  • Perform oversight inspections and review of the Design Builders construction activities. 
  • Document and report on Design Builders compliance with approved contract documents (Release for Construction Plans, Special Provisions, and WSDOT Standard Specification). 
  • Document daily inspection activities by taking photos and filling out daily inspection reports. 
  • Conduct regular contract compliance audits in the Contract Audit Tracking Systems through the use of field reviews. 
  • Verify all material documentation related to materials that are permanently being incorporated into the project
  • Independently communicate any materials documentation deficiency to the Project Engineer, Project staff and the Design-Builder. 
  • Provide technical assistance to other project inspectors, field testers and contractors regarding testing, documentation, compliance with contract documents. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 2 level, the following are required:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent. OR
  • Two (2) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent such as previous construction inspection work. OR
  • A Master’s degree with a major study in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Traffic, Transportation, or closely related field. 

 

Candidates will also have:

  • Current driver’s license with the ability to travel to and from various job sites within the region. 
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50lbs. 
  • Ability to adjust work schedule to coincide with the contractors’ activities as needed, including working long hours beyond scheduled shift and at nights. 
  • Ability to obtain General Inspector certification within six (6) months of hire. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Construction Materials Testing certification within six (6) months of hire. 
  • Ability to read, interpret, understand, review, and produce contacts plans, specifications, and estimates. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and work in confined spaces. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Experience as a Construction Inspector inspecting drainage, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), bridge construction, environmental and in-water work. 
  • Experience working for long periods of time on major highways with complex traffic control set ups. 
  • Experience inspecting fish passage projects with environmentally vulnerable project locations. 
  • Experience acting as an on-site lead representative. 
  • EIT or BSCE

 

Important Notes 

  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
