Under supervision, operates and maintains light and heavy mobile equipment.

  • Operates mobile equipment such as locomotives, cranes, derricks, hoists, backhoes, brown bears, road graders, concrete mixers, large air compressors, large pumps, sludge handling and stripping machines.
  • Operates bulldozers and track & wheeloaders in the performance of excavation, backfill, loading, grading, cleaning roads and removing snow from plant premises.
  • When assigned to the debris boat, operates a crane in the removal of trees, wood, trash and other material from various navigable waterways.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.
Other Job Functions
  • Keeps equipment in a clean, lubricated and workable condition; makes field repairs and adjustments and reports needed repairs and faulty operation of the equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Environmental Conditions
May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics, adaptabilities and maintenance needs of heavy power driven equipment such as cranes, hoists, excavators, road graders and bulldozers.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 

Original Entrance - Introduction

This examination is open to all candidates, both internal and external, who meet the minimum requirements.
Applications will be accepted only during the designated filing period for this examination.  The opening and closing dates of the filing period are listed in this announcement.  Applications must be filed by the following method:

Minimum Requirement Date: The minimum requirements for this examination must be met by the qualification date listed in this announcement.
Residency Requirement: There is no residency requirement to participate in the examination; however, all District employees must be domiciled within the boundaries of the District within six months of successful completion of probation. (The District is in Cook County, Illinois, covering approximately 90% of the county area.)
Veterans' Preference: In Original Entrance examinations, five points for Veterans' Preference will be added, in accordance with the District statute, to the scores of those candidates who attain a passing score in all phases of the examination. Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is one year (250 days worked).

Original Entrance - Examination

Duties: Under supervision, operates and maintains light and heavy mobile equipment. 
Absolute Requirement: Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with an endorsement for vehicles with air brakes.
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy mobile equipment, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 30% and a performance test weighted 70%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list. 
The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as: operation of medium and heavy power-driven equipment such as hydraulic cranes, rubber tire and track mounted front end loaders, combination backhoes, augers and tillers, forklifts, bulldozers, graders and pumps; equipment maintenance requirements including adjustments and repairs; pre-operation, in-operation and post-operation equipment inspection requirements; equipment safety control systems, practices and related occupational hazards; and crane set-up procedures. The written test will also assess candidates' reading comprehension; ability to read and interpret gauges and instruments; and read and interpret hand signals, traffic signs and signals. 
The performance test will assess candidates' skill in the operation of equipment such as that listed above.
Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, March 31, 2023 should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.
WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 West 111th Street, Chicago, IL.
Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.
Candidates are asked to bring a copy of their Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License, with an endorsement for air brakes to the written test. The properly endorsed license must be issued on or before April 9, 2023.
PERFORMANCE TEST:  Candidates who pass the written test will be informed by email regarding the date, time and place of the performance test.
 

Original Entrance - Appointments

Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years.  Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job and a criminal history background investigation.
