The role:  
Bring your technical expertise to our Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology and HazMat Section as the State Foundation Engineer. In this role, you will work with designers to implement standards on the state’s most complex projects, provide statewide standards for geotechnical foundations and seismic design, mentor and guide engineers, recommend design deviations for both geotechnical design and bridge design, and oversee our strong motion sensor program.  Apply today!

A day in the life:
  • Serve as the primary contact for the Bridge Section regarding foundation and geotechnical seismic design.
  • Serve as the technical expert on foundation design for the agency.
  • Develop technical standards for foundations and geotechnical seismic design in the Geotechnical Design Manual, Bridge Design Manual, and the Seismic and Tsunami Design Manual.
  • Develop and coordinate training for the GEEGH program.
  • Provide consultation for projects.
  • Represent the agency on national committees and task forces.
  • Mentor, guide, and train professional engineers and technicians through a peer review process.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment with extensive use of a computer. Some, work will be performed outdoors at project sites, and may occur in all weather conditions.
  • Remote work may be available, with manager approval.
  • ANSI approved boots and rain gear are required to perform duties in the field.

 What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering AND three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.

NOTE: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.
 
An Oregon Geotechnical Engineering license is preferred.
 
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Expertise in the design and construction of a wide variety of foundation types with the desire to improve design standards and work with others to improve construction specifications and techniques.
  • Expertise in design, recommendation, and construction of seismic loads and mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical and diverse engineering staff; mentor junior staff; present new concepts; and develop training for internal and industry partners.
  • Proficient at 360-degree collaboration to resolve technical project delivery challenges as well as emergency incidents.
  • Experienced at providing constructive quality control and quality assurance reviews.
