Job Description:

The City of Battle creek is looking for a Civil Engineer to develope plans and specifications for engineering projects, reviewing and inspecting construction, maintenance, and repair projects for infrastructure improvements.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Develops plans and specifications for infrastructure improvements; prepares detailed municipal engineering project specifications and cost estimates to be used by bidding contractors; prepares engineering drawings, maps and plans; verifies material for construction are appropriately specified and utilized.
  • Conducts engineering research projects such as traffic, lighting, water consumption, future paving and sewer systems requirements; reviews commercial site plans for compliance in accordance with City standards.
  • Meets with public to discuss projects; troubleshoots and recommends solutions to defective work, resident complaints, or changes in condition. 
  • Utilizes various software programs such as AutoCAD, MERL, Field Manager, City Works, and ArcMap.
  • Reviews and inspects construction, maintenance, and repair projects to ensure conformity with plans and specifications using established civil engineering standards, practices, and principles. Prepares and maintains detailed records of installations, inspections and other activities.
  • Receives and verifies citizen complaints regarding departmental work activities.
  • Reviews inspector daily reports (IDR) and verifies data for accuracy; prepares and submits pay estimates based on IDR information.
  • Prepares cost estimates for future projects.
  • Schedules, directs, and inspects the work of technicians concerning roadway, utility, parks and other infrastructure design and construction activities.
  • Takes samples of field materials for testing; utilizes surveying equipment as necessary.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports.
  • Develops public information plan for projects.
