The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and highly talented engineer/materials scientist to perform materials/manufacturing research in the area of additive manufacturing (AM) and laser manufacturing. Work will include metallic additive manufacturing processes such as laser powder bed fusion as well as subtractive laser processing (femtosecond laser workstation). The engineer/scientist will perform research to better understand the effects of laser manufacturing processes on materials and metallurgy and will develop engineering tools for advancing metal AM technologies for novel AM materials. Activities may include, demonstrating AM material print performance, printing specimens, testing of specimens, analysis of specimens using a number of different lab instruments and sensors, and taking appropriate action to drive material or process improvement and scientific discovery. The engineer will also be tasked with designing and analyzing hardware using Solidworks or equivalent. Additionally, the candidate will help build the additive manufacturing research business through technical leadership and proposal writing.


Minimum Qualifications

R1 Minimum Qualifications
• A bachelor's degree in engineering or physics from an accredited University.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Able to pass a National Agency Check

R2 Minimum Qualifications
In addition to all R1 requirements the candidate must have 5 years’ experience in one of the following areas; Lasers, Metal Additive Manufacturing, Metallurgy, Laser/Material Interaction, Laser Manufacturing, Data Driven Materials Science.
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• A graduate degree in engineering, materials science, or physics from an accredited University.
• Experience in metallurgy (refractory alloys preferred).
• Operating laser-based manufacturing equipment in support of research.
• Understanding of laser/material interaction.
• General familiarity with multiple Additive Manufacturing processes.
• Understanding of Additive Manufacturing processes and modeling tools.
• Experience in mechanical testing.
• Demonstrated hands on experience in materials characterization.
• Basic understanding of data acquisition and analysis concepts.
• Experience performing design of experiments (DOE's) and statistical analysis.
• Leadership experience.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project.
• Ability to either present, or participate as a reviewer, in technical and program reviews.
