This position is responsible for providing laboratory support to the Materialography lab in the Materialography and Analytics Group at UDRI. Candidates are expected to conduct their work according to accepted standards of the trade and once trained, are expected to be able to carry out specific tasks associated with metallographic analysis such as sectioning, mounting, polishing, optical microscopy, analysis, documentation and photo-documentation.


Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or its equivalent is required.
A minimum of three years of related technical experience is required.
Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.
Candidates for this position must be capable of applying the fundamentals of their trade or skill toward the completion of laboratory activities associated with research problems, with only general supervision.
Ability to exhibit good problem solving skills and have familiarity with Microsoft Office suites.
Ability to assemble equipment and prepare materials required for tasks, conduct experiments or studies, document test results accurately and assist as requested in evaluating results.
US citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

An Associate’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or a closely related field is preferred.
Experience with performing tasks involved with preparation of materials for metallographic analysis is strongly preferred, including inventory management, sectioning, hardness testing, cold and hot mounting, polishing, and porosity determination.
Experience with digital photography is strongly preferred as well as a basic understanding of image software such as Photoshop, ImageJ/FIJI, and any image analysis software.
Experience with materials characterization including but not limited to optical and electron microscopy, spectroscopy (IR, UV-VIS) and thermal analysis, is a preferred skillset.
