The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a motivated surveyor with strong technical and interpersonal skills to serve as a Transportation Engineer 2 in Spokane, WA. This position will independently apply standard engineering procedures and techniques to accomplish a wide variety of work in the office, laboratory, and/or field. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to lead and train technical support staff and entry level engineers, and understands the importance of safety with people, vehicles, and equipment both in design and construction projects. 

What to Expect
The typical work schedule for this position is Monday-Friday with work hours between 6:00am-6:00pm. Alternate work schedules are available based on Supervisor approval. May work weekends or night hours during construction, including overtime. Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Serve as a construction or design project survey team leader, scheduling and directing the surveying of medium to large-complex construction projects.
  • Oversee the operation, adjustment, and maintenance of all types of survey equipment.
  • Direct topographic and data collection surveys for design projects. 
  • Schedule and direct construction inspection and surveying. 
  • Review plans and answer questions pertaining to those plans. 
  • Direct the submittal of all pay notes and figures pertaining to surveyed quantities making sure all are into the office in a timely manner. 
  • Track quantities, costs, and workforce to stay within budget/resolve issues early. 
  • Compile data and costs to justify change orders. 
  • Provide material testing when necessary. 
  • Use Microstation, lnRoads, and Design Manual to perform design tasks, drawing and revising contract plan sheets.
  • Produce special provisions, Ebase estimates, structure notes, and quantity tabulations. 
  • Calculate and checks quantities for contract bid items. 
  • Calculate or check calculations for cuts, fills, areas, quantities, elevations, grades, coordinates, and curves.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • A valid driver’s license. 
  • A Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) qualified tester in DTT Density or equivalent, or the ability to achieve within 24 months of hire.
  • An ACI qualified tester or the ability to achieve within 24 months of hire. 
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
 
In addition to the qualifications listed above,  one of the following is also required:
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training with one (1) year as a Transportation Engineer 1Transportation Technician 3Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent; or
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent; or
  • A Master's degree with a major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • LSIT or EIT
