About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
 
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two engineering technicians to perform skilled technical work in support of activities of highway construction, design, and PS&E phases of projects in Spokane, WA. The Transportation Technicians selected for this opportunity will perform duties to include field site assessments, design, construction inspection, materials testing, and surveying to ensure WSDOT projects are designed and constructed according to established standard and specifications. These positions will provide you with the ability to experience working in varied environments, such as out in the field, in an office atmosphere, and in the laboratory.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Assist with the inspection of materials. 
  • Interpret highway construction plans, specifications, and special provisions in monitoring the contractor’s work. 
  • Effectively interact with contractors, crew members, and the public.
  • Work as a density tester on subgrade, surfacing, and paving projects. Works as an asphalt inspector on paving projects.
  • Check calculations made by others. 
  • Assist the Office Engineer with construction documentation. 
  • Perform design tasks, drawing, and revising contract plan sheets. 
  • Produce Special Provisions, Ebase estimates, Structure Notes, and Quantity Tabulations. 
  • Work on a construction or design project survey team on projects of all sizes.
 
Qualifications
These are Transportation Technician 3 positions. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the positions at a lower level, a Transportation Technician 2 or a Transportation Technician 1, depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
 
At the Transportation Technician 1 level ($40,812.00- $54.492.00 annually) the following is required:
  •  A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
 
At the Transportation Technician 2 level ($50,592.00- $68,076.00 annually) one of the following is required:
  •  Associate degree in civil engineering, surveying, drafting or other closely related fields from an accredited university; OR
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent AND two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent; OR   
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker.
 
At the Transportation Technician 3 level ($57,324.00- $77,028.00 annually) one of the following is required:  
  • Bachelor’s Degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field; OR
  • Two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent; OR
  • Certification as an Engineering-in-Training (EIT); OR
  • A Land Surveyor’s license. 
In addition to one of the above, the following qualifications are also required:
  • A valid driver’s license. 
  • Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) qualified tester certification or equivalent or the ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) qualified tester certification or equivalent or the ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
