Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 
 
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Technician 3 to support the agency’s mission by producing quality Right of Way plans, Sundry Site plans, Records of Survey, and Permits to aid in the acquisition of real property needed by the Washington State Department of Transportation. This position contributes to the office mission of delivering Olympic Region projects for construction.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician 3 will:

  • Create, revise, and manipulate Right of Way plans, Sundry Site plans, Records of Survey and other needed documentation and files to aid in the process of project delivery. 
  • Communicate with co-workers within WSDOT, consultants and outside agencies to compile necessary information to complete the documentation and files needed. 
  • Read and interpret title reports and property descriptions to plot parcel boundaries; calculate areas of total parcels and needed acquisition areas.
  • Use databases, websites and other resources to find various documents to include deeds, records of surveys, title reports and other documents.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent. OR-
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. OR- 
  • Certification as an Engineer in training. OR-
  • Certification as Land Surveyor in Training. OR-
  • A Land Surveyor’s license.

In addition to the above, the following is also required:
  • Experience in the use of Microstation for plan sheet development.
  • Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to distinguish between the colors of red, blue and green.
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Experience in the use of InRoads for creating alignments and boundaries.
  • Working knowledge of the Public Land Survey System.
  • Ability to maintain computer databases.
  • Ability to understand differences between easements, warranty deeds, temporary construction easements, waivers, right of way entries, quit claim deeds, judgement and decrees, possession and use and other documents.
