The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill the Structures Inspection and Repair Supervisor (Structural Engineer Transportation Supervisor) vacancy in the Bureau of Structures!

This full-time position can be headquartered in the following locations:

  • Central Office (Madison)
  • North Central Region (Wisconsin Rapids or Rhinelander)
  • Northeast Region (Green Bay)
  • Northwest Region (Superior or Eau Claire)
  • Southeast Region (Waukesha)
  • Southwest Region (La Crosse)

Position Summary

This Bureau of Structures (BOS) Supervisor position is responsible for the oversight of the Structural Inspection and Repair Unit in the Bureau of Structures-Structures Maintenance Section. The Structural Inspection and Repair Unit Supervisor operates independently and reports to the Chief of Structures Maintenance Section (DOT Engineering Chief) working with minimal (general) supervision. This unit is responsible for general oversight of the statewide structures inspection program and the maintenance and repair of state-owned structures. This position works primarily with the BOS Design Section, BOS Development Section, and Regional Maintenance personnel. This position will also communicate with other stakeholders within the Division of Transportation Systems Development (DTSD) and the Department, other State DOT offices, the Federal Highway Administration, Canadian DOT offices, County personnel, Engineering Consulting firms, and other outside agencies in addition to Wisconsin DOT personnel regarding civil and structural engineering programs, policies, and procedures.

A background in structures is required, including an understanding of design and construction concepts, general knowledge regarding structure repair and maintenance, as well as an understanding of structure inspection. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills are also required. As the supervisor of a unit, the ability to effectively prioritize and assign work is important, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and initiatives that will be active concurrently within the unit. This position also has a role in policy discussions and decisions, and thus requires the ability to effectively develop written policy documents and communicate them to the appropriate stakeholders. This policy may be published in the WisDOT Bridge Manual, Structures Inspection Manual, or other venues.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range 81-03 with an annual salary of $83,200 - $99,840, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement - A valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.

In addition, qualified applicants will also have experience with all the following:

  • Experience in Bridge Structure Analysis/Design OR Bridge Structure Construction OR Structure Inspection
  • At least 5 years of transportation project management experience
    • Experience may include:
      • Overseeing transportation projects in design/construction, providing fieldwork guidance, providing technical consultation
      • Oversight and involvement with QA/QC policy and procedures
      • Managing project or program tracking/reporting
      • Developing and tracking project budgets
