The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Design Supervisor (Transportation Engineer 3) to support WSDOT’s mission by ensuring that highway construction projects are designed and built in compliance with agency policies, procedures and practices. Work assignments expect professional capabilities and proven experience in the practical application of engineering concepts and techniques. As a Design Supervisor, this position will provide support to the Project Engineer and Assistant Project Engineer and supervise a team of engineering designers and CAD technicians.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Supervisor will:

  • Direct, supervise, and train engineers and technicians in the creation of design documents, contract plans, specifications, estimates, schedules, hydraulic reports, Project Summary documents, Project Management Plans (PMP) and other drawings, reports, and documents needed to produce an ad-ready plans, specifications, and estimate PS&E document package.
  • Assist the Project Engineer and Assistant Project Engineer in the preparation of costs to complete, funding requests, and aging reports.
  • Plan, schedule and track the activities of staff; mentor design staff and perform annual performance evaluations; approve timesheets, employee evaluations, work scheduling, employee interviewing, training nd other work as required/assigned.
  • Oversee the collection and interpretation of information used by support groups such as environmental, real estate and utilities.
  • Develop presentations to other department staff, the public or officials of other agencies/jurisdictions, provide timely updates to the Project Management and Reporting System (PMRS).
  • Administer highway construction projects to ensure the work conforms to the contract plans and specifications; supervise inspectors and field crews; review contractor submittals, field notes, change orders, inspector's daily reports, and progress estimates. 
  • Ensure field personnel are safety aware and that they operate in accordance with WSDOT safety guidelines.

 

Construction work is performed at an outdoor construction site for observation, information gathering, and occasional physical activities. Exposure to hazards include traffic, noise, construction, weather, and uneven terrain.

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

OR

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2, Bridge Engineer 2 or equivalent.

OR

  • A Master's degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.

 

In addition to the above, the following is also required:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of planning, scheduling, tracking and reporting the status of projects.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles, methods and practices of standards related to highway and transportation design, contract administration and construction.
  • Ability to understand and interpret written material such as policies, manuals, plans, and reports including plans, specifications, and estimates.

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training
  • Knowledge of WSDOT policies and practices applicable to design and construction of transportation projects.
  • Experience using Microstation and/or InRoads.
