THIS POSITION IS LOCATED AT EGLIN, AFB. The primary purpose of this position is to perform on site research at the AFRL Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The primary duty associated with this position is to implement and develop quantitative and qualitative image data analysis from energetic material microstructures through traditional and advanced image processing / segmentation methodologies, including machine learning. Additional responsibilities include operation of characterization instruments (electron microscopes, x-ray computed tomography, etc.), measuring material properties that can be related directly to the characterized microstructure, experimental design and implementation, and reporting and publishing results. A successful candidate must be able to work both independently and as a member of a dynamic and challenging team.


Minimum Qualifications

R2 Minimum Qualifications:
BS degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgy), Chemistry, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
A minimum of three years of directly related experience is required
Candidate must have prior experience with image/video data processing and image/video data analysis.
Candidate should be familiar with the theory, operation, and data analysis of general microstructural characterization techniques and equipment to include but not limited to: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray computed microtomography, and sample preparation techniques.
Candidate should be familiar with the current state of the art in microstructural characterization techniques.
Candidate must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a Secret level or higher clearance.
Candidate must be able to obtain a DoD certification in explosives.

R3 Minimum Qualifications:
PhD degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgy), Chemistry, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience is required.
Candidate must have prior experience with image/video data processing and image/video data analysis of multicomponent materials (e.g. composites, alloys, microelectronics).
Candidate should have experience with the theory, operation, and data analysis and maintenance of general microstructural characterization techniques and equipment to include but not limited to: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray computed microtomography, and sample preparation techniques.
Candidate should be familiar with the current state of the art in microstructural characterization techniques, and an understanding of the capabilities required given a material set/situation.
Candidate must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a Secret level or higher clearance.
Candidate must be able to obtain a DoD certification in explosives.
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

R2 Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years of experience with image analysis, machine learning, or related efforts. Advanced degrees may be substituted for work experience.
Familiarity with energetic materials, including DoD munitions accountability and disposal regulations, standard energetic material characterization publications, and engineering controls.
Understanding of the interplay between constituents in multicomponent materials (e.g. composites, alloys, microelectronics).
Experience working in a national research laboratory setting (DOE, DoD, etc.).
Experience with computing techniques to include Matlab, Python, and Labview.
Experience with machine learning implementation in image analysis or similar research.
Excellence in verbal and written reporting skills and experience working in multi-disciplinary teams.
Existing security clearance and/or existing DoD certification in explosives.

R3 Preferred Qualifications:
6+ years of experience with image analysis, machine learning, or related efforts.
Understanding of the underlying materials science of multicomponent materials (e.g. composites, alloys, microelectronics) and experience in measuring or simulating properties and performance.
Familiarity with energetic materials, including DoD munitions accountability and disposal regulations, standard energetic material characterization publications, and engineering controls.
Experience working in a national research laboratory setting (DOE, DoD, etc.).
Experience with computing techniques to include Matlab, Python, and Labview.
Experience with machine learning implementation in image analysis or similar research.
Excellence in verbal and written reporting skills and experience working in multi-disciplinary teams.
Existing security clearance and/or existing DoD certification in explosives.
