The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Survey Party Lead (Transportation Engineer 2) to support the survey activities of the Olympic Region and the Right of Way Plans Office, leading a crew for field mapping, staking, Right of Way data acquisition, and survey data processing. This position provides quality survey data, which is required as a first step to develop engineering and eventually construction plans for WSDOT. The survey data provided improves the safety, quality, and capacity of the Washington State’s Transportation system by providing the data for contract plans development. The Survey Party Lead expected to exercise initiative and judgement in carrying out assignments according to established policies, procedures, and standards.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Survey Party Lead will:

  • Direct survey crew performing alignment control, location survey work using manual and/or electronic data collection procedures.
  • Determine data collection needs as well as accurate, efficient, and safe operation of the party; train party members in all aspects of surveying and safety procedures.
  • Teach and operate instruments such as Total Station, Data Collector, Global Positioning System/Real Time Kinematics and Reference Network equipment, levels, and other survey instruments to collect topography data and stake Right of Way, location and construction as requested.
  • Collaborate with lead of parties on survey requests and scheduling.
  • Research jobs and calculate preliminary alignments in INROADS.
  • Quality check daily files and deliverables prepared by crew members; make calculations to set up jobs.
 
Survey work is performed during the daytime, outdoors, in inclement weather, in densely wooded highly vegetative areas or sprawling urban environments. Exposure to hazards may include exhaust, high-speed traffic, steep or uneven terrain, near bodies of water, transporting survey equipment.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent education and/or experience.
OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
OR
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training
OR
  • Land Surveyor in Training may be substituted for the two (2) years’ experience.
 
In addition to the above, the following is also required:
  • Valid Driver’s license to operate a state vehicle.
  • Basic knowledge of principles and practices of highway surveying and engineering
  • Skills to perform calculations and basic level highway design
  • Knowledge and skills relating to the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of survey equipment
  • Knowledge of engineering and surveying software used for the development of complex transportation projects in the office and in the field.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices in traffic and field.
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 
  • ATA in Civil Engineering/Surveying, or Land Surveyor in Training, or Professional Land Surveyor license.
