Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Headquarters’ Environmental Services Office is currently seeking a Policy Branch Manager to provide leadership, guidance, and support to several programs for which WSDOT is a national leader among state departments of transportation. The programs that this position oversees include cultural resources protection, National and State Environmental Policy Acts, air quality and greenhouse gas reduction, noise control, climate change resiliency and environmental justice. We are seeking candidates who strongly believe that progress in these areas means a better world for us now and for the generations to come. The Policy Branch Manager reports to the WSDOT Environmental Services Director and leads a high functioning team of program managers and senior policy specialists.
 
In this position, you will direct the programs responsible for WSDOT’s compliance with state and national laws and policies.  You will be an advisor to the agency for implementation of gubernatorial priorities including environmental justice, climate resilience and clean transportation.

Some of what you will do:
  • Direct the work of two program managers and two senior policy specialists (total of 10 staff) 
  • Provide leadership to branch staff and support their ongoing efforts to develop and maintain statewide technical guidance and improve environmental compliance 
  • Advise the agency on highly complex environmental programs, policies and legislation
  • Develop strategies to respond to state and federal initiatives 
  • Deliver high quality annual reports on a variety of topics from state transportation greenhouse gas emissions to federal programmatic agreement compliance 
  • Represent WSDOT in state and national forums 
  • Collaborate with leaders across the agency improve the transportation project delivery process and apply multi-disciplinary approaches early in decision making 
  • Supervise, coach and train professional staff
  • Manage a budget of $2.6 million
