About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
 
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Transportation Technician 3s (TT3 - IT) to support WSDOT’s mission by ensuring that highway construction projects are designed and built in compliance with agency policies, procedures, and practices. By supporting the design, construction and project documentation and control, the benefit to taxpayers and the community is maximized. By diligent design, inspection, environmental compliance and materials testing along with complete record keeping, the benefit to taxpayers and the community is maximized. As a Transportation Technician 3, this position will apply application of engineering concepts and techniques to provide construction support in the office, testing, lab, and/or field, project documentation, and CADD technical work.
 
What to Expect
This position requires field work that is performed outdoors in inclement weather on construction sites in daytime or nighttime; work is often performed next to high-speed traffic and on steep or uneven terrain. This position will require working in a varying schedule including night work.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician 3 will:

  • Measure and calculate quantities in the field and prepare documentation to support payment for activities inspected.
  • Prepare and check survey notes, field notes, daily inspection reports, force account records, material verification and other documents.
  • Serve as a material tester, performing concrete, asphalt, aggregate, densities, and other material testing and tracking.
  • Assist field crew with shrub clearing, staking, ticket taking, and receiving material.
  • Assist in development and preparation of project summaries, contract plans, specifications, special provisions, estimates, plans for approval and other engineering documents. 
  • Utilize CADD to prepare preliminary design plans, contract plans and exhibits for public display.
 
Qualifications
This is a Transportation Technician 3 (TT3) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (TT1 or TT2) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
 
At the TT1 level, the following is preferred: 
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
 
At the TT2 level, the following is required:
  • An Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, surveying, drafting or other closely related fields. OR-
  • Completion of an accredited vocational/technical program consisting of at least 1,200 instructional hours in Civil Engineering Technology, surveying, drafting, structural detailing, engineering design or other closely related fields. OR-
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent.   (College level or vocational/technical course work in engineering, drafting, survey, mathematics or other closely related fields will substitute for the required technical engineering experience on a year-for-year basis.) OR-
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Maintenance Technician, one of which must be as a Maintenance Technician 2.
 
At the TT3 level, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent. OR- 
  • Associates Degree or Technical Certification in engineering or project management related fields AND one (1) year of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent. OR-
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training.
 
In addition to the above, the following is also required:
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Proficient in WSDOT materials testing procedures
  • Ability to interpret plans and specifications
  • CCIS and CAPS experience

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.   
  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Transportation Technician 3 level; however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 1levels.
    • Transportation Technician 1: $40,812 – $54,492 
    • Transportation Technician 2: $50,592 – $68,076
    • Transportation Technician 3: $57,324 – $77,028
