Seeking a talented materials engineer to join a multidisciplinary research group in execution of research specifically dealing with problems in the areas of high temperature material behavior and environmental effects in aerospace materials.

The Advanced Materials Characterization Group that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and talented materials engineer to join a multidisciplinary research group in execution of research specifically dealing with problems in the areas of high temperature material behavior and environmental effects in aerospace materials. Major job duties include: Providing technical expertise on characterizing material behavior, microstructure, residual stress, and damage evolution. Conducting experiments, data analysis, and developing new approaches for determining the behavior of structural materials. Characterizing microstructure and damage mechanisms using metallurgical tools. This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The successful candidate is expected to provide technical expertise to the AFRL research team to define and meet project objectives, and to summarize findings in technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Additional attributes sought include strong interpersonal and communication skills, detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks, able to prioritize workloads, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.


Minimum Qualifications

R1 Minimum Qualifications:
• BS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics from a nationally accredited university.
• Experience with the tools and equipment used in a materials testing facility.
• Experience with programming/scripting for data analysis or modeling.
• Experience with optical and electron microscopes.
• Basic understanding of non-destructive evaluation techniques.
• Basic understanding of residual stress and experimental methods for measurement techniques.
• Experience presenting technical information.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Applicants must be a Citizen of the U.S.A. and be able to pass a National Agency Check for continued employment.

R2 Minimum Qualifications:
An R2 must meet all R1 minimum qualifications in addition to the qualifications listed below:
• Completion of Master’s Degree by June 2023
• A minimum of two years of directly related experience in a mechanical test laboratory
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Demonstrated successful experience with the tools and equipment used in a materials testing facility.
• Demonstrated successful experience with optical and electron microscopes.
• Experience with analytical tools, such as electron dispersive spectroscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) microscopy.
• Experience with finite element analysis for solid mechanics applications.
• Demonstrated successful experience presenting technical information at conferences.
