The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experience traffic engineer to serve as our next Toll Systems Development Engineer supporting our Toll Division. This position will support the Development sub-section within the Toll Division and is responsible for the development, design, and construction of all stat toll systems. As a technical program specialist, this position is responsible for the management, delivery, and implementation of the tolling system projects. The successful candidate appointed to this position will also work with the operations group in order to investigation solutions, leverage testing capacity and historic data for input in system development tasks.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Toll Systems Development Engineer will:

  • Provide management, technical review, and expertise in the design, testing methodology and installation for roadside and datacenter toll applications. 
  • Conduct technical discussions on the approach for various system designs and testing methodology including vehicle detection, classification, network, disaster recovery, performance verification and acceptance criteria. 
  • Coordinate with internal WSDOT support groups, other agencies, and consultants to complete design, development of tolling and systems projects including but not limited to TRS placement, Structural, Electrical and Roadway Design coordination, MOT, and Testing as it relates to Toll Systems, tracking design decisions and incorporating them into design manuals as needed. 
  • Lead technical discussions on the approach for various system designs and testing methodology including vehicle detection, classification, network, disaster recovery, performance verification and acceptance criteria. 
  • Correspond with the public to address project related questions and concerns and provide information to support presentations for Executive Management. 
  • Monitors and reports on installation of roadside toll equipment. Some site visits verifying the installation progress and design compliance. Coordinating with other WSDOT representative who perform site visits, compiling and tracking the progress of site acceptance.

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Five (5) years of experience in traffic engineering, highway operations, and/or system development
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field. 
  • Current Driver’s License
  • Ability to work near heavy construction machinery operations adjacent to fast paced traffic. 
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain on or adjacent to steep slopes and uneven ground in variable weather conditions. 
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50lbs. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform engineering design analysis, including both civil and systems engineering. 
  • Knowledge in traffic engineering areas of freeway analysis, transportation systems management, ITS/electrical systems design and managing software development. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license
