Job Description:

The Design Engineer oversees the entire electrical design of a design build project from the initial bid to final completion, all the while working to increase efficiency, profitability, and constructability as the design and project progresses.  A Design Engineer serves as the professional liaison between our company and the client in the preconstruction phase and is also the primary support person for answering design questions from our project management and field forces staff.  Accomplishing these tasks is achieved by having a well-balanced amount of time spent in both the professional office setting and in the field observing how we build our projects.  The Design Engineer reports to the Director of Engineering in our preconstruction department.
 
Essential Functions:
 
Engineering Services
  • Perform field surveys to evaluate existing conditions of electrical systems.
  • Evaluate electrical systems and provide recommendations for repair, remain as is, expansion, or replacement strategies.
  • Provide feasibility study for the evaluation of existing facilities.
  • Provide short circuit, coordination, arc flash, and infra-red studies for clients, as wells as internal projects.
  • Provide support for any code or standards issues that arise on projects.
  • Provide lighting photometric studies.
  • Provide technical assistance to operations.        
  • Define scope of work of electrical systems for Design/Build projects.
  • Conduct code research studies to demonstrate compliance.
  • Interface directly with owner and project team to understand needs of the project.
  • Conduct electrical meeting to extract information from the customer and other trade partners for the development of electrical plans.
  • Evaluate electrical products for best fit to client’s needs and expectations.
  • Develop various options with pros and cons for owner evaluation.
  • Organize project data and requirements.
  • Interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical plans to assist in the development of the electrical design.
  • Develop schematic design, design development and construction documents for power, lighting, and fire alarm system.
  • Design within the financial constraints of a project budget.
  • Design electrical plans, one-lines, schedules, and details.
  • Coordinate with BIM technicians and Prefab in the development of the electrical design and plans.   
  • Provide electrical specifications for power, lighting, and fire alarm systems.
  • Review submittals for compliance of specifications.
  • Understand the needs required by low voltage systems and communicate them in construction drawings.
  • Coordinate electrical design with project team.
  • Proficient in 15,000 and 600 volt power systems.
  • Provide input to improve electrical standards drawing procedures.
  • Provide 3D renderings for lighting options to promote lighting upgrades.
  • Proficient in electrical design software – REVIT, SKM, Easy Power, AGI 32, Visual 3D.
  • Conform to the standards and processes outlined by the BIM Manager.
  • Present reports, plans and specifications to clients.
  • Provide value engineering/enhancement opportunities to project managers for possible increased margins.
  • Evaluate major equipment packages for potential cost saving opportunities.
  • Evaluate “equal” light fixtures for potential cost saving opportunities.
  • Provide alternate solutions for un-constructable or incompatible systems specified by others.
  • Provide technical assistance to project managers.
  • Evaluate new products and the implementation of them into our methods and procedures for better efficiencies.
  • Improve standards for typically installation details that are “menu” based.
  • Integrate drawings between engineered plans and prefab.
  • Provide prefab ideas dependent upon manufacturer recommendations, system components, and installation techniques. 
  • Participate in potential new project interviews.   
  • Promote “in-house” engineering and value add services that sets us apart from our competition.
  • Promote internal engineering and constructability review to prevent construction issues.
  •  Provide value engineering/enhancement opportunities prior to submitting bids and proposals.  These opportunities would be quantified to allow us to become more aggressive on bid day.
  • Review major equipment packages prior to bid submittal.
  • Oversee all major equipment packages from suppliers and clarify questions prior to bid.
  • Provide recommendations for major equipment packages to the lead estimator.
  • Provide risk assessment for discrepancies in major equipment packages.      
  • Evaluate vendor proposals (fire alarm, lightning, etc.) for best option.

 Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Thorough understanding of CAD/BIM workflows
  • Proficient in AutoCAD – MEP/REVIT, CAD, and file management
  • Proficient in fundamentals of power and lighting systems
  • Thorough understanding of multiple State and National CODES governing jobs
  • Conform to the standards and processes outlined by the CAD/BIM Manager
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative environment with exceptional written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects
 
Education and Experience:
Electrical Engineering or similar Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent degree is preferred with 5+ years of experience working for an electrical design firm or design build electrical contractor or an associate degree in electrical design, science, energy analysis acceptable with five years of progressive experience. Maintain professional and technical development goals to acquire PE certification.
 
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to alternate between sitting and standing in a general office environment.  Some travel to other offices or job sites is required.
  
Location:
This is a full-time position and attendance is required at the main office located in Madison, WI or at one the satellite offices (currently) in Pewaukee, Janesville or Dubuque as required.
