Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill the Construction Engineering Manager vacancy located in Seattle, WA. This position is responsible for providing management oversight for the construction project teams that manage the SR 99 South Access Phase 2, SR 520/ I-5 Express Lane Connection project, and other various ongoing SR 99 projects. Reporting to the SR 520 and Alaskan Way Viaduct Program (AWV) Director of Construction, the position also provides direction to their staff and consultant teams on the development and implementation of policies and strategies to ensure the successful delivery of the projects. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction Engineering Manager will:

  • Provide management and leadership oversight to the Project Office Teams (potentially two offices) each with engineering technicians, consultant staff, and 15-25 WSDOT engineers.
  • Mentor and support the Project Office Team Managers (Project Engineers and Assistant Project Engineers) with personnel issues within the Project Office, working with SR 520 and AWV Program Management, and the Northwest Region HR Department. 
  • Provide support and direction as necessary to ensure the Project Office Teams meet project goals, objectives, and deliverables.
  • Ensure the Project Office Teams provide timely and accurate reporting of project status, progress, and project finance to Management and Executives.
  • Provide any necessary assistance or guidance in working with local agencies and stakeholders to resolve any issues, negotiate permits, negotiate agreements, and changes.
  • Meet with their counterparts in the City of Seattle, working on project issues that may arise between the contractors and the City of Seattle or between WSDOT and the City of Seattle. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Eight (8) years of professional civil engineering experience including managing highway and bridge, or civil projects and directing staff.
  • Four (4) years of experience managing or supervising a diverse workforce of engineers and technicians on highway and bridge or heavy civil construction projects at the Project Engineer level.
  • Professional registration as an engineer in the branch of civil engineering in the State of Washington.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Ability to efficiently mentor and guide a multidiscipline staff of both WSDOT and consultants, and effectively respond to WSDOT Management, as well as the needs and concerns of other customers.

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Experience working on large, complicated highway and bridge projects (both design-build and design-build delivery approaches)
  • Ability to work with WSDOT’s Communications team, and if necessary, the media occasionally.
  • A working knowledge of WSDOT’s mission, goals, objectives, highway engineering practices, technical procedures, and management processes and principles, including scope, schedule, and budget elements.
  • An understanding of WSDOT policies, standards and procedures, and engineering principles necessary to facilitate decision-making.
