About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire multiple engineering professionals to serve an integral role in support of WSDOT’s mission. As the Land Surveyor, the primary undertaking of this position will be to update and/or create new Right of Way (ROW) plans, determine right of way centerlines and boundaries, prepare survey records and documents, and occasionally mark WSDOT boundaries in the field or set monuments.  
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Land Surveyor will:

  • Lead a team to develop, review, and approve Right of Way Plans
  • Create computer files and maintain database for WSDOT owned ROW using existing records, title reports, record of surveys, and other legal documents. 
  • Communicate with WSDOT staff to determine property required for construction of projects. 
  • Show the required property on ROW plan and prepare documents defining the area of land to be purchased from each private property. 
  • Review ROW plans prepared by Design Office and Consultants to ensure accuracy and adherence to WSDOT standards. 
  • Direct survey crews to survey features, monuments, and other data that will help to determine the highway centerline and property ownership. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license valid in Washington state.
  • One (1) year of Transportation Engineer 2, Bridge Engineer 2, Transportation Planning Specialist 2, or equivalent experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of surveying and engineering principles. 
  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to manipulate up to 40lbs of equipment
  • Ability to work around fast-paced high-volume traffic near construction sites. 
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain and work in inclement weather

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Knowledge of WSDOT policies and procedures
