Job Description:

The Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting for a Civil Engineer Specialist IV position within the MSU Design Unit. The MSU Design Unit is a cooperative educational center administered by the Montana Department of Transportation and located at Montana State University, Bozeman. The center is focused on recruiting MSU engineering students to a career in transportation design and providing them with the skills and experience necessary to begin a successful career. The successful candidate will join a team of engineers who provide a supportive work environment and mentor the students as they begin their careers.

This position is responsible for complex road design, construction cost estimating, scheduling, and preparation of construction contract plans and proposals. The ideal candidate is flexible with knowledge, experience, or willingness to learn and perform road, drainage, or bridge design activities. Incumbents work closely with Design Project Managers in all areas of duties assigned including collaboration, mentoring, and providing technical support to other project team members and Engineering Division staff. Incumbents have the skill and discipline to work independently, under the supervision and direction of a Design Project Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 years of experience in progressively responsible highways engineering. 
  • Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: Proof of passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is required.
