The role:  
 
Join our team in Bend as a traffic design engineer! You will be responsible for preparing plans, specifications and estimates for permanent signing, traffic signals and illumination in compliance with state and federal design standards. You will also oversee the work being done by other designers and review the work of consultants and contractors to ensure compliance. Apply today!
 
The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at a professional engineer 1 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for an associate in engineering 2 ($4,750- $7,366 monthly) to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate acquires a professional engineer's license. Underfilling will not exceed six months.

A day in the life:
 
  • Design and prepare permanent signing, traffic signal and illumination plans, specifications and estimates.
  • Serve as the engineer of record and direct the activities of other designers and assist with training junior staff.
  • Coordinate with the region traffic manager, traffic operations staff and region safety engineer to ensure designs meet the operational and safety needs of the highway.
  • Review material submittals and change orders on projects under construction.
  • Serve as the region representative for the statewide traffic sign, signal and illumination designers groups.
  • Prepare for meetings, prepare, present and sponsor action items and crew team proposals and implement approved team proposals.
  • Hybrid remote work options available! Work is performed in an office environment and may require traveling for field scoping and inspection trips or to attend meetings throughout the region.

What we need for a professional engineer 1:
A valid professional engineer’s (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.
 
Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in the state of Oregon within six months of hire.
 
What we need for an associate in engineering 2 (underfill):
Completion of and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and one year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods.
 
Note: To be eligible for the associate in engineering 2 underfill option, must have their valid professional engineer's license (the ability to stamp) within six months of hire. In most cases, this will mean applicants must have already met all PE licensing requirements (e.g. completed required education and training, passed the FE and PE exams, etc.) and submitted their complete PE license application to the PE licensing body.
 
What we need for both:
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering, traffic operations or traffic design (signs, signals, illumination, striping) principles.
  • Experience using computer aided drafting and design tools specifically Microstation and InRoads is preferred.
  • Experience preparing construction specifications and estimates.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary project team environment.
