As a Senior Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for custom lab automation and system integration work, both with commercially available and STEMCELL developed instruments and subsystems. You will work closely with customers to design, configure and test custom automation solutions, and roll them out at the customer’s site. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to product development, innovation, and solution provision that will drive our customers’ research at the forefront of science.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with external customers to understand their needs, and deliver high quality, robust laboratory automation solutions for their life science workflows

  • Use commercial laboratory automation scheduling software packages to control laboratory equipment (e.g. Thermo Fisher Momentum, Biosero Green Button Go)

  • Write robust and maintainable code that controls automated equipment, specifically complex, and multi-threaded protocols that interact with multiple hardware and software targets

  • Conduct laboratory automation system integration troubleshooting and testing, including formally documenting the outcomes and test results

  • Draft specifications, requirements, design documentation, and troubleshooting guides to document the design process and to be of assistance to the customer at the conclusion of the collaboration

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Systems, Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering or Computer Science with 6+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science with 4+ years of relevant experience

  • Proven experience in integrating automated systems from requirements gathering to commissioning, establishing device communications, development of workflows, troubleshooting, system testing, and scale up

  • Lab automation experience e.g. liquid handlers (Hamilton Company, Tecan), robotic arms, cell separation equipment, and imaging systems

  • Excellent communication (oral, written, presenting) and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a cross functional team

  • Experience in researching and selecting equipment for use in laboratory automation applications is desirable
