The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Bridge Engineer 3 (In-Training) position in Tumwater, WA. This position is responsible for assisting in federally mandated bridge inspections as a Co-Inspector. NBIS standards dictate the scope and requirements of a bridge inspection program. The position supports WSDOT’s mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation by ensuring the safety and reliability of the bridges on the state highway system.
 
Note: This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Bridge Engineer field and achieve the goal class of a Bridge Engineer 3. Candidates will be considered as a Bridge Engineer 1, 2 or 3, depending on their qualifications. The salary levels and qualifications for each are:
  
Bridge Engineer 1: $57,324 - $77,028 annually
Bridge Engineer 2: $63,216 - $85,020 annually
Bridge Engineer 3: $69,756 - $93,840 annually

 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Engineer will:

  • Assist in the completion of in-service bridge inspections in conformance with FHWA and WSDOT requirements and procedures.
  • Access structures using a variety of techniques and access equipment, including but not limited to, Technical Rope Access, UBIT’s, Bucket Trucks, Scaffolding, Boats, or other equipment as needed.
  • Perform non-destructive ultrasonic, magnetic particle and dye penetrant tests on complex structures.
  • Complete inspection reports under the supervision of a Lead Inspector, and in conformance with FHWA and WSDOT requirements and procedures.
  • Perform Stand By On-Call Emergency Response up to 4 weeks a year or as required.
  • Assist with, or conduct as assigned, preliminary work prior to an inspection trip; review bridge reports and letter files; prepare bridge inspection packets; assemble and prepare equipment, vehicles and inspection materials.
  • Develop bridge inspection requirements and planning tools.
 
Qualifications
To be considered at the Bridge Engineer 1 level you must have the following minimum requirements:  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. 
  • Valid unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one after employment (within 1 month).
 
To be considered at the Bridge Engineer 2 level you must have the following minimum requirements:  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.  
  • Valid unrestricted Washington State driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one after employment (within 1 month).
  • Engineer in training certificate. 
  • One (1) year of experience in bridge design, inspection, or load rating. 
 
To be considered at the Bridge Engineer 3 level you must have the following minimum requirements:  
  •  Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.  
  • Valid unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one after employment (within 1 month).
  • Engineer in training certificate.
  • Two (2) years of experience in bridge design, inspection, or load rating. 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Completion of a Bridge Condition Inspection course.
