Job Description:

UDRI is seeking an entry to mid-level engineer to perform research into the behavior of advanced materials and structures, including simulations of structural performance, damage evolution, and material processing. The position encompasses development of theoretical and numerical models for the performance of emerging materials, and implementation of these models as software plug-ins for commercial analysis codes such as Abaqus, ANSYS, and LS-DYNA. The high-motivated candidate is expected to work closely with other staff engineers and customers to identify modeling approaches, test methods, and data analysis techniques to support both research and commercial objectives. Multiple-year funding for this position is available, and post-doctoral candidates may apply, but the position is intended to be a longer-term, full-time staff position within UDRI.

This position is within UDRI’s Structures Group which has solved complex engineering problems and conducted structures-related research and development for over 40 years. The Structures Group is a key contributor to the integrated and dynamic Applied Mechanics Division that provides comprehensive capabilities for systems engineering, design/redesign, analysis, prototyping/fabrication, testing, and qualification in order to transition “real-world” hardware solutions for air and ground vehicles and complex test equipment.


Minimum Qualifications
-- Master’s degree in Mechanical or Materials Engineering, or Applied Mechanics from an ABET-accredited institute is required.
-- At least 3 years of experience in finite element analysis of mechanical and thermal behavior, including significant experience with commercial FEA software such as Abaqus (preferred), ANSYS, etc.
-- Proficiency in computer programming in Fortran and/or C++.
-- Ability to lead engineering projects whether working independently or as part of a team, including experience collaborating with experimental investigators.
-- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-- Due to the security requirements of this position, US citizenship is required.
-- The candidate must be able to pass a National Agency Check


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

-- Doctoral degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline.
-- Experience performing static, dynamic, and thermal modeling of polymeric and ceramic composites.
-- Knowledge and experience in nonlinear solid mechanics, especially damage mechanics.
-- Ability to program in multiple relevant languages (Fortran, C++, Python, Matlab).
-- Experience in writing user-supplied models for commercial finite element codes.
-- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with current and potential customers, and to develop new research areas.
-- Demonstrated ability in archive-quality technical writing and proposal writing.
