About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an engineering professional to support WSDOT’s mission by ensuring that highway construction projects are built and documented in compliance with agency policies and practices. This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training that allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Engineer field. As the Assistant Office Engineer, this position is tasked with the administration and processing of clear and concise correspondence, change order preparation and material submittal processing to support safe, reliable, and cost-efficient transportation options for the public.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Office Engineer will:

  • Provide support for the Materials Lead Engineer and Contract Administration Team
  • Gather, collect, evaluate, and research contract change orders, contract plans and specification, letters, and supporting documentation, relating to materials for the assigned project. 
  • Independently evaluate and process all types of contractor submittals and shop drawings. 
  • Communicate and coordinate with Materials Lab and other WSDOT offices, contractors, and fabrication inspectors to resolve material related inquiries and issues. 
  • Prepare the materials documentation for final review and fill-in the contract materials checklist and write an explanation of any deficiencies. 
  • Review asphalt and concrete mix designs and documentation received from the contractor for conformance with the contract plans, provisions, standards specifications, standard plans, and construction manual. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 1 level, the following are required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, OR
  • Associate degree and Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate, OR
  • An EIT certificate and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Technician 3 

 

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 2 level, the following are required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or another related engineer field, OR
  • Associate degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3, OR
  • An EIT certificate with an associate degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, OR 
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 3, OR
  • An EIT certificate and two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1

 

In addition, candidates at either level will have:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Current WSDOT General Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain within 120 days of employment. 
  • Ability to manipulate up to 30lbs with or without reasonable accommodations. 
  • Ability to read and interpret contract plans, provisions, standard specifications, and other principles, practices, and methods relative to the construction of transportation projects. 
  • Ability to travel throughout the region to construction sites. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Civil Engineering Technology degree or equivalent
  • Qualified Tester with extensive experience in asphalt, aggregates, and compaction. 
  • Two (2) years of experience in roadway related construction inspection or materials testing.
