Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking experienced engineering professional to join our Toll Division in the Northwest Region. Under the direction of the Toll Systems and Operations Manager, this position is responsible for managing the system portion of the Back Office System. This work includes really understanding how the system operates, conducting routine monitoring checks, identifying problems, partnering with the system vendor to prioritize issues and activities, coordinating with the CSC vendor and roadside vendors, and analyzing data. This is a critical position that interacts with nearly every person in the Toll Division.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Operations Engineer will:

  • Oversee the processing of all transactions received form the roadside toll collection systems and ensuring all are resolved as the system is designed.
  • Oversee operations, maintenance, and audit work associated with the back office system
  • Investigate operational problems – such as discovering trips stuck in the process and leading the effort to coordinate how this will move forward.
  • Improve the workflow processes using mathematical and scientific methods. 
  • Provide WSDOT with technical expertise, understanding and insight into the operations of the system to help make operations and design decisions. 
  • Testing and validating system functionality.
  • Leveraging reports and issues to develop system improvement projects.
  • Conducting QA/QC functions.
  • Serving in the rotation for Engineer-on-duty.

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or 3 or equivalent such as a Bridge Engineer 3 or Transportation Planning Specialist 3, or equivalent. 

 

In addition to:  

  • Current driver’s license
  • Knowledge of basic techniques for data handling and presentations
  • Knowledge of basic computer systems and communications systems
  • Knowledge of performance measures and experience monitoring system performance.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Research and Analystical: Ability to research, evaluate, analyze and interpret data and draw conclusions from the data. 
  • Ability to improvise methods where there are few prescribed or established approaches. Ability to modify direction based on new information or requirements. Ability to train others with little or no knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude towards vendors and contractors while dealing with difficult situations. Ability to develop positive, productive, respectful working relationships with clients and co-workers.
