Job Description:

UDRI is seeking a mid- to senior-level engineer to assist in solving structural and systems design problems on a variety of military platforms and applications, with emphasis on landing gear systems. The candidate will conduct structural analysis, develop new hardware, or reverse engineer designs. The candidate will also develop technical documentation including CAD solid models, detailed engineering drawings, bills of materials, military technical orders, reports, presentations, and other engineering data. These activities will involve the application of fundamental engineering principles to the design/analysis and experimental testing of aerospace systems to improve performance, efficiency, durability, or affordability. This position is contingent on winning new contracts for landing gear engineering.

The position is within UDRI’s Aerostructures Team which offers significant experience working with airframe structures, landing gear, tires, transparency systems, radome structures, and engine components. The Aerostructures Team is part of the Structures Group which has solved complex engineering problems and conducted structures-related research and development for over 40 years. The Aerostructures Team and Structures Group are key contributors to the integrated and dynamic Applied Mechanics Division that provides comprehensive capabilities for systems engineering, design/redesign, analysis, prototyping/fabrication, testing, and qualification in order to transition “real-world” hardware solutions for air and ground vehicles and complex test equipment.

This position is located in Dayton, Ohio.

Minimum Qualifications

R2 Minimum requirements for a mid-level Aerostructures Engineer include:
-- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil, or Combined Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
-- At least 3 years of relevant experience and in-depth knowledge of basic principles associated with solid mechanics and structural design. This includes coursework and practical experiences working with computer aided design (CAD) software and finite element analysis (FEA), including pre-processing of models of post-processing of results.
-- Strong verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with other engineers, as well as with current and potential customers.
-- Proficiency using the standard suite of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
-- Due to the security requirements of this position, US citizenship is required.
-- The candidate must be able to pass a National Agency Check.

R3 Minimum requirements for a senior-level Senior Aerostructures Engineer include the above requirements plus the following:
-- At least 8 years of relevant experience with sufficient knowledge to lead structural design and analysis programs for aerostructures.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

-- Teamcenter PLM, SolidWorks CAD, ANSYS or ABAQUS FEA, and Matlab software.
-- Advanced aerospace materials, including landing gear steels, composites, and additive manufactured structures, and a fundamental understanding of the basic behavior of these materials.
-- Hands-on experience with mechanical and structural systems, especially landing gear systems.
-- Structural testing of mechanical systems and components.
-- Probability and statistics.
-- US Air Force Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) and/or Mechanical Equipment and Subsystems Integrity Program (MECSIP).
-- Fatigue and life prediction.
-- DoD’s Joint Engineering Data Management Information and Control System (JEDMICS).

Preferred qualifications for a senior-level Senior Aerostructures Engineer include the above experience plus the following:
-- Graduate-level training in a related scientific or engineering discipline.
-- Sufficient knowledge to help develop technical and cost proposals.
